Keeping the color tame.
The studio at the moment.
Jenny Saville’s work blows my mind. The way she applies her oil paint has influenced the way I apply my ink. Apparently there is a piece of hers at MONA, a trip down to Tasmania is on the cards.
This one has been sitting in front of me for a few days now, and I think its my favorite of the lot. The fluro hasn’t photographed well here, but in real life its eye searing!
I’ve been making these little collages of queuing people, they are really exploratory little works, but they have really helped me focus in on the types of people I want to paint, as well as display ideas.
I have spent more time on this painting than any of the others, and I’m not entirely happy with the lips. Color on the face has been touch and go at the best of times.
The view from my desk, this is what i have been looking at today. The yellow guy on the left is quite far out as far as color goes and the guy on the right is much closer to real life. No texta in these ones though.

In the studio today…
‘Awkward Lady w Bread’ this is about number 3 in the set. This lady was great when I took her photo. After a brief explanation I asked her to pose and relax. She doesn’t exactly look relaxed, but it’s an interesting little study to see someone trying hard to give you what they think you want.
